Binder and Filler: Nicaraguan
Behind The Stick:
Another newer cigar to the industry, the Asylum 13 comes from none other than the famous Christian Eiora who distributes the Asylum through the Fabricas Unicas in the black volcanic soil hills of Nicaragua. While keeping true to a Nicaraguan puro, the Asylum 13 line has released four vitolas under the current name, Robusto being a 5 x 50 and then each name designating the size and name - Sixty is a 6 x 60, Seventy is a 7 x 70 and Eighty is a 6 x 80 - quite the line up! Following the current trend of producing cigars in the 60 plus ring gauge, Christian Eiora has been able to use Asylum 13 as a way to fill that desire that not only 'fits the request' but tastes great too! While the over sized ring gauges may not be for everyone - they are still worth giving a try - you may end up liking it! Onto the review!
What a great milk chocolate colored wrapper - while the band does not give it much distinction against the other cigars in your humidor, the wrapper does call attention. The oils are present but not overwhelming as some Nicarguan puro's have a tendency to be - the wrapper actually appeared to have a small amount of 'hair' to it, more silky and velvety than I was expecting. While there were a few visible veins, the seams were tight and uniform and gave no indications of issues. The head clipped easily and the foot took to flame just as intended - nothing wrong to report here!
This is a cigar for the lovers of filler tobacco - the larger size provides a slow, even burn give a balanced, refined and smooth flavor to the cigar. A rush of spice and toasted nuts start it out, hints of leather and a semi-sweet dark chocolate slowly building the backbone of the flavor profile. Dark chocolate runs the main stage of this cigar, slight variations of leather and spice mix back and forth, the intensity of leather and chocolate dominating the flavor profile at the end.
This is one of those cigars that sometimes you just have to give it a try in order to really experience what it has to offer. If you are one of the many people who are a fan of the taste that filler tobacco provides, you are going to fall for the Asylum 13 before you know what hits you. Full body and full flavor, these larger ring cigars have become quite popular in the past few years and Christian Eiora took advantage of his expertise and Nicaraguan tobacco to create a puro to fill that need in the market. Add to all this, a price that only Buy Discount Cigars can offer and a box purchase is a no brainer!
