Punch cigars is one of the most famous brands in existence - from the uninitiated to the veterans, Punch is one of those names that you immediately recognize and can either remember the last one you had or are looking forward to your next smoke. Even with this history, finding information about certain cigars proves to be a bit more troubling than others. These cigars, sporting a reddish hued Sumatra wrapper grown in the mountains of Ecuador are accompanied by a blend of Connecticut Broadleaf, Nicaraguan, Honduran and Dominican tobaccos that are designed to bring out the best of each. The Champion in specific is designed to highlight the wrapper and filler flavors by expanding to a full 60 ring gauge at its widest point and then tapering down to increase the wrapper to filler ratio. Enough rambling - onto the review!
The first thing you may notice about this cigar is its odd shape - being a full 60 ring gauge at its thickest point, I have to commend the rollers on how perfect the wrapper appears to have been applied, even with this variation in size. The wrapper is a medium shade of brown with an oily sheen and a slightly red hue in the right light. Very small veins are noticeable and the wrapper has an almost leathery look to it although the head clipped well and the cigar took to flame with a little attention from the smoker.
Even with the odd shape - this is a smoke producing power house! The copious amounts of smoke make it easier to pull the cedar and leather flavors from the cigar, leaving an almost tea like finish. Once the bulk of the cigar had a chance to warm up, highly enjoyable sensations of spice add to the increasing wood flavors, the wrapper becoming more and more apparent in each draw.
I am a fan of Punch cigars and more so of 'oddly shaped' cigars so finding the two together made this a cigar I had to buy. The flavors, while not the most dynamic on the street, produce an 'experience' of an increasing ratio of wrapper to filler that truly cannot be matched. If you are a fan of the woody, slightly spicy natural tobacco flavors, you are going to find you will be gravitating towards Punch cigars just like the rest of us! The Punch Rare Corojo has some terrific flavor, great construction, and an excellent price at BuyDiscountCigars.com - recommending a box purchase is an expected!
