La Flor Dominicana, while newer to the scene than some of the more established names, has been making quite a presence for themselves as of late. Working with the famous Lito Gomez, they decided to create the "Ligero" series - emphasizing the peppery, spicy, full body and nicotine kick that this thicker and darker leaf carries. While this is a cigar that - by nature - requires a more veteran palate to appreciate ( or even tolerate ) I have heard from many newer smokers that with the right meal before hand, the La Flor Dominicana Ligero line is not only a welcomed addition but for some, a must have. Enough rambling - onto the review!
The wrapper had a slight shine to it, the oils making the light mocha brown wrapper stand out against the black and red band. The cigar is well made, evenly packed throughout and was finished by an almost perfect triple cap. The pre-light draw of this cigar was full of that natural tobacco flavor, slightly hinted by cedar and earth all while maintaining a slightly sweet note I still cant place. The head clipped easily and the foot took to flame with a bit of diligence during the toasting.
The first third started off very well, right in the medium to high medium body range with a light wood flavor that carries a sweet undertone that I just can't pin point. This portion of the cigar really doesn't 'dazzle' too much, a slight nut flavor appearing from time to time but the main focus from the cigar is maintaining the burn and warming up. The second third is where the changes started to take place, the foreground flavor being nuts and wood while the sweet flavor from before is now nothing but a fading memory, hints of leather slowly starting to creep out through the haze.
The profile of the last third was my favorite, the main flavors of leather and a dark roasted nuts completely cover your taste buds, it is very easy to pick out these flavors and let them linger for some time - nothing better than a long finish. As I neared the end of this last third, I started picking out the flavors from before; Nuts, Wood, Sweet undertones.
This is a cigar for the veterans out there - there is no denying that. Those looking for the honey sweet, light airy and grassy flavors will be sadly disappointed by this powerhouse of a cigar. Dark, rich, full of nicotine and full of flavor this cigar shows just what La Flor Dominicana and Lito Gomez can create.
