Behind The Stick: If you are one of those characters who keeps up on the latest and greatest in the cigar world, you may remember the Black Market as being a release at the latest IPCPR convention by the Alec Bradley company. This is one of those cigars that seems to have people split right down the middle - either you love it, or you hate it - not much of an in between on these. Nicaraguan wrapper, Sumatra binder and Panamanian and Honduran tobaccos as filler - not a huge grouping of different tobaccos but enough that this should be interesting. Without boring you about the details much longer - onto the review!
Construction: I am not usually a big Alec Bradley fan, but the Black Market is actually a really nice looking cigar. Right out the box, the bulk of the wrapper is hidden behind this 'sleeve' with a normal band 'semi' hidden under that. Once you get past the extra paper - the dark, almost chocolate colored wrapper really shines - literally. This cigar is just covered in oils, not as bad as some full body smokes out there, but when I drug my finger across the wrapper I would have bet money that the oil had transferred. Evenly packed from head to foot, this cigar does have a bit more of a 'hefty-ness' to it ( if that makes sense ). The cigar is not over filled, but seems abnormally heavy in my hand. Aside from that this is a great looking smoke!
Flavor: This is a cigar that pulls no bullshit - right out the gate in a high medium to low full body punch, the flavors of tobacco, earth and a dabbing of a nutty flavor is offset by the smallest bit of spice through the nose. Although the transition was a very subtle one, sweeter notes of the same flavors came through with a burnt wood overtone - damn this tastes good. Some sites have reported chocolate flavors near the end but I was unable to pick these flavors out. The flavors did carry this dry characteristic to them, it was interesting but at the same time constantly going for my water got old quick. Shy of that, I was really impressed with the Alec Bradley Black Market smoke.
Overall: If you are in the mood for a decently priced high medium to full body smoke - don't look around, just grab an Alec Bradley Black Market. The flavors were not overly dynamic - enjoyable and interesting but not something I would put into the 'wow' cigar category. This is a slow burner and in my opinion this is a cigar that you are getting more than you are paying for, but as I said, don't expect this to be one of the most complex cigars in your humidor. I enjoyed the AB Black Market enough to want to go pick up some more, but I don't think this is going to be a box purchase of mine. If you have had a chance to try the Black Market let me know your thoughts - if not I suggest you save up and get a 2-5 pack and give them a shot!
