Borkum Riff Pipe Tobacco is blended by Swedish Match, a company with a good reputation located in Sweden. The blend is air cured and consists of burley and Virginia tobaccos with a traditional ribbon cut. It is marketed as a premium tobacco.
Now, I had never heard of Borkum Riff Pipe Tobacco until I started searching for a new brand on the internet. It just does not seem to be sold in the local stores, and I have visited dozens in my area, so I would know if it was around. However, it seems to be quite popular and readily available online.
The packaging for Borkum Riff has very similar colors and styling to Captain Black, which is a package and a tobacco that I have enjoyed for years. However, I would find out the smoking experience was not bad, but
The tobacco itself has a very pleasant vanilla aroma to it when opened, and also just a hint of coconut. I rather enjoyed these exotic smells in the tobacco, and I found they made me quite eager to pack up a pipe.
The Borkum Riff Pipe Tobacco packed and lit with relative ease, and I immediately noticed it has a mild character. No powerful tastes, no burning throat, just a very mellow smoking experience with subtle flavor and character. In fact, it was a bit too subdued and subtle for me, but not unpleasant. However, as I reached the bottom of the bowl, things took a change for the worse. It just seemed to start to taste more like chemicals, or some other unnatural flavors.
With a very affordable price, good pedigree, and an easy smoking experience, I cannot say Borkum Riff is bad. However, I will say it does not finish well, and is a bit mild for my liking.
