Forgive me for the horrible music reference in the title of this review, but by God, I just could not help myself! We are reviewing Criss Cross Pipe Tobacco this week, and besides a somewhat silly name, we'll see what else it has going for it.
I have to start this review by talking about price, because Criss Cross Pipe Tobacco is one of the lowest priced brands I have ever seen anywhere. This of course makes me a little nervous, but with it costing just a little more than ten dollars, the cheap man inside me just had to give it a go!
The packaging is very bright, and they offer several different flavors. These include Original, Mint (menthol), Mild/Smooth, Vanilla and Black Cherry. I opted to try the Vanilla, as I enjoy a flavored pipe tobacco from time to time. Besides being bring, there isn't much to say about the package, it is simple, has Criss Cross on it in big lettering, and of course, is resealable.
Opening up the Vanilla Criss Cross Pipe Tobacco I instantly could smell the vanilla, perhaps a little too strongly, but it was a pleasant smell. The tobacco is a bit irregular cut-wise, but that seems par for the course when you try value brand pipe tobaccos. I was able to fire it up pretty easily, but it did require relighting from time to time, which I do find a bit annoying. (I hate the taste of lighters and matches!)
The smoke itself is not horrible, but definitely not one of my favorites. The tobacco flavor is on the harsher side (gives you that hot feeling in the back of your throat) and the vanilla flavor is sweeter and bolder than I care for. I really prefer a hint of flavor, not a bucket of it pouring down my throat.
If you like a very strong flavored smoke, Criss Cross is for you, if not, I'd say loosen up the purse strings and buy something a bit better.
