When I think of Captain Black Pipe Tobacco, I think of the gold standard. Something from yesteryear that stood for something, a name everyone knows, and something that sets the benchmark for everything else. My grandfather smoked a couple of brands from time to time, but his go-to brand, his everyday smoker, was Captain Black. Fast forward many years, but still many years ago, and it was the first brand I ever smoked. I think that is one of the things I enjoy a lot about smoking a pipe; the history, the memories, the old-fashioned simple feel of it all.
Seeing a package of Captain Black Gold show up via the mail from ordering it on www.buydiscountcigars.com felt odd but great. I mean, I have been buying this brand at my local drug store for decades, and seeing it in a new way was odd, but very convenient. The packaging brings back all those memories, and I pause to look at that old pirate's ship on the front.
If somehow you have not smoked Captain Black Gold, I'll fill you in on the smoking details. The smoke and tobacco are black and golden, wonderfully mild and tempered, and the aroma wafts with such remarkable pleasantness. It smells like the royalty of pipe tobacco. (My favorite thing about Captain Black Gold is the smell, it really is special to me!)
The packaging, tobacco, cut, everything, is of great standards, and has not changed in decades, and in this case, that is a wonderful thing. Great pipe tobacco 50 years ago is great pipe tobacco today, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it!
Obviously the price is a little higher than value brands, but that is to be expected, and there is still great value here. Sometimes you get what you pay for, and sometimes you get a whole lot more.
